For the first time, BEM members participate in the Agar Art Contest, an annual competition of the ASM (American Society for Microbiology), where professional and amateur artists demonstrate their creativity and skills in microbial art.
This year —for the first time— the contest defined the theme “Your favorite microbiologist” as a requirement for the works, so our team decided to honor Fanny Hesse, who was an American laboratory technician and scientific illustrator, whose most important contribution was introducing the use of agar in microbiology.
We recommend you to give a like to this work (requires Flickr account) and learn more about the contest in the following link: https://flic.kr/p/2nWT3E1

Identifying the risk of new mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics in bacteria discovered in Antarctica and formulating molecules that allow these properties to be inhibited are part of the objectives of Tan Tari Bricks, a team from the University of Chile and the only one that represents the country in iGEM Design League 2022, one of the largest synthetic biology student competitions in the world. During the end of October and the beginning of November, the team must present different advances of its work, which proposes an experimental model and computational biology, as well as educational actions and incidence in public policies.

The challenges surrounding the discovery of hyper-resistant bacteria in Antarctica
During 2017 and 2019, a team of researchers from the University of Chile traveled to different points of the Antarctic Peninsula collecting soil samples to study the microbial communities of this inhospitable and mysterious corner of the world. The study of these, subsequently, identified their surprising resistance to different antibiotics, disinfectants and toxic elements.

Hyper-resistant bacteria discovered in Antarctica that could pose a risk to global health
Genes that would grant resistance to multiple antibiotics and other antimicrobial substances such as copper, chlorine or the already known quaternary ammonium would possess bacteria discovered by researchers from the University of Chile in soils of the White Continent. Andrés Marcoleta, leader of the study published in the prestigious journal Science of the Total Environment, explains that part of the genetic information that gives these properties is found in mobile genetic elements, which are pieces of DNA that can be easily transferred to other microorganisms. including pathogenic bacteria.
